Retail sales increased in 1.1% in April in the UK, thanks to the royal wedding efect and the good weather, and compared to a previous month increase of 0.2%. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), these were the best April results since 2002, boosted by the extra bank holiday that lead to the biggest rise in food store sales for the last three years. Also, clothing and footwear increased sales in 3.2%, the highest rise since June 2009. Gardening and sports sales also benefited from the warm weather.
Economists were expecting an increase in retail sales of up to 1%, and the increase in March was of 0.2%. However, analysts think this spike should be temporary as underlying problems remain.
