"The use of apps with toys is definitely a trend in the toy industry"

Richard Gottlieb, CEO, Global Toy Experts

14/06/2012

Richard Gottlieb is in charge of Global Toy Experts, a toy industry consultancy offering analysis and strategies to toy companies, as well as information through its web magazine Global Toy News. Gottlieb is also author of the book Ambassador to the Kingdom of Wal-Mart.

What are the main trends of the US toy market?

The use of apps with toys is definitely a trend in the toy industry.  Look for them to become more sophisticated. Also, look for the industry to progressively offer popular versions of cell phones and tablets that are lower priced than the adult versions but with a level of sophistication that is close to those adult versions.  For example, drones cost millions of dollars to fly over territory and take pictures.  You can now purchase the Parrot AR Toy Drone for $299 and do the same thing over your neighbourhood.

It seems like tech toys are going to be more present every day. How could this affect the toy industry?

Moore’s Echo is the law that says whatever is cutting edge technology will become a toy in seven years.  Look for that time frame to reduce to three years.

Are families aware of the importance of toys in the development of children?

Very much so.

And how do you think the global toy market could evolve in the next years?

It is difficult to know what impact the current economic conditions will have over the coming years.  Having said that, I believe that some of the sharp drop off in sales of video games will free up money for the toy industry.  So, I think we could see a gradual increase in sales.
