The Angry Birds movie will hit theaters in 2016

Rovio will be responsible for the financing and production of the film

After many rumours, it's official: the Angry Birds will star in a film to be shot in 3D and scheduled to premiere summer 2016. Rovio, the game developer, will be in charge of financing and development, without any major studio as a partner. The company has signed John Cohen (producer of Despicable Me) as producer, and David Maisel (former chairman of Marvel Studios) as executive producer.

By 2016, the company will not stay idly: Rovio is planning the release of 52 weekly episodes of a series designed for digital media that should have started airing in fall 2012.

The company's goal is twofold: first, to be present on all screens with this brand, born in a series of apps that have already been downloaded more than one billion times; and secondly, to control all aspects of the business: Rovio not only develops games but also handles the licensing and management of audiovisual content.

In fact, the company announced that 30% of its 2011 revenue came from licensing. In May, the brand had about 200 licensees.
