Trade improves in Europe

Retail sales rebound in January

Retail sales in the euro zone increased by 2% in January compared with the same month last year, although the rise was 0.4% compared with December 2015. In the set European Union (EU), retail trade grew by 2.8% year on year, while monthly increased by 0.8% .The monthly rise in the single currency area responds to improving non-food (+ 0.7%) and food, beverages and snuff (+ 0.5%) products. To this is added the 0.1% increase automobile fuel.

In all the 28 states, the monthly increase of 0.8% is explained by the rise of 1.1% in sales of non-food products and 0.7% for food, beverages and snuff, while the fuel for cars has risen 0.5%. Portugal (+ 5.9%), Poland (+ 3.4%) and Slovenia (+ 3%) member countries have been more pronounced improvements, while on the opposite side Luxembourg (-1.2%) are , Austria and Slovakia (both -1.1%).
