Nintendo will build Super Mario theme park in Japan

The company will launch the park in time for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020

The world’s first theme park based on Nintendo games is due to be set in Universal Studios Japan, and will have a Super Mario focus. £250m will be invested into the themed zone that will feature famous Nintendo characters such as Mario, Luigi, Zelda, Donkey Kong and various Pokémon. The theme park will be at Universal’s Japan site in Osaka, 300 miles from Tokyo, and is due to be completed by 2020, in time for the start of the Olympic Games.

Upon announcing the park last year, Nintendo and Universal Studios commented: “Nintendo has created remarkable and imaginative worlds filled with captivating stories and beloved characters. Now, for the first time, those stories and characters will be brought to life in entirely new ways. The immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal’s theme parks and will feature Nintendo’s most famous characters and games.”

The news comes in the same month that Nintendo is expected to make its smartphone debut, hoping that the move will counter falling profits. In February, the company announced a profit outlook 51% below its previous target following weak sales of the 3DS.The games maker is set to release its first smartphone game this month. The app is called Miitomo and will allow users to create Mii characters and interact with one another. Separately, The Pokémon Company, which is owned by Nintendo, will release the smartphone game Pokémon GO in 2016.
