Global video game market worthed 23,18 billion euros in 2014

The three most important markets were the US, Japan and the UK

The global video game market worthed 23,18 billion euros in 2014, an increase of 3% over 2013, according to the report "The video game market 2014" from EAE Business School. Since 2009 the market has grown at a very interesting path, not less than 4% annually.

By category, 81.5% of video games sold were for consoles, while the market for computer (Mac or PC) represented 18.5%.

According to the EAE study, the three most important markets in the gaming industry in 2014 were the US, Japan and the UK, with a business volume of 12.69, 3.34 and 2.85 billion euros respectively. Countries that spent less on games in 2014 were China, Belgium and the Netherlands, with a business volume of 91, 363 and 532 million respectively. Spain occupies the middle of the table, with 763 million euros, ahead of Italy (747 million euros) but below the main European economies (Germany, France and the UK).

Regarding expenditure per capita, Canadian, British and Americans are the ones who spent most on video games worldwide, with figures of expenditure per inhabitant of 65.42, 44.69 and 39.37 euros respectively. The opposite side was occupied by China, Italy and Spain, with 0.07, 12.09 and 16.42 euros respectively. The differences in spending between countries are important, even among similar economies. Germany and France presented figures per capita of 34 and 37 euros, doubling the fourth European economy, Spain.

The forecasts presented by the EAE report show that the market will grow at very interesting path in the period 2014 - 2018. The video game market will worth 26 billion in 2018, representing an average annual growth of 3%, in line with what is experienced in recent years. By then, countries with higher spending on video games will still be the USA, Japan and the UK, with 15.88, 4.55 and 3.64 billion euros respectively.
